James “Jim” Ratigan was a London fan and artist active in the 1950s and 1960s, in charge of publicity for the 1952 London SF Con. Ratigan was a talented artist and had cover art on several issues of Nebula between 1954 and 1958.

He married a fellow fan Dorothy Jacobs sometime after the 1952 con, but they were a couple by then already.[1]

A note on the surname: contemporary fan publications used both Ratigan and Rattigan. Rob Hansen theorises that the former is correct as this is the name used on Dorothy's apazine Satan's Child and presumably she typed this herself; similarly, she used Ratigan in the 1952 conrep, and she would know the name of her boyfriend (inasmuch as we can trust the text version; yet, listing of the convention members in the same issue has Rattigan). However, Eye #4 which was co-edited by Jim uses the name 'Rattigan', also used on the cover credits for Nebula (where a mistake is more possible) and thus by ISFDB. (So we can not quite rule out the possibility he changed the spelling around 1953…) Alas, fanzines by others use vary the forms basically randomly without any dependence on time.

Fanzines and Apazines:

  • Eye [#4 May 1955 only, as co-editor with others]
  • 'Our 'Zine [1952] (one-shot, co-editor with others)
