British con fan Dave Tompkins’ first convention was Seacon '79, where he found himself helping out. He worked on many conventions in many capacities, from gophering to committee, and was almost invariably to be found building a convention's art show.
He possessed hard-won knowledge about the best way to assemble the display boards and, just as importantly, to get them back into the van at the end of the con; he also provided the invaluable service of storing them between conventions.
