The Gannets were a club in the north-east of England formed after the 1970 Eastercon. They began meeting at Ian Williams's house in Sunderland and were at first known as the North East Fan Group (NEFG) but on September 8, 1970, switched to a subterranean pub called The Gannet, from which their name, Gannetfandom, was bestowed by Greg Pickersgill.
Their publishing house was Gannet Press and they ran Silicon, as well as one Eastercon, a Mexicon and a Corflu, plus pubbing many fanzines, including Gannet Science Fiction Review.
Early members included Williams, Harry Bell, Ian Penman, Jim Marshall, Thom Penman (no relation to Ian), Ritchie Smith and Ian Maule.
