(1943 – 2006)

James Patrick "Jim" Baen was a SF publisher and editor. In 1983 he founded his own publishing house, Baen Books, specializing in the adventure, fantasy, military SF, and space opera genres.

In late 1999 he started an electronic publishing business called Webscriptions (since renamed Baen Ebooks), which is considered by many to be the first profitable e-book vendor.

Prior to starting Baen Books, he was editor of IF in 1974, Galaxy from 1974 to 1977, and then moved first to Ace Books and then joined the newly created Tor.
