Richard C. West, a Madison, WI, fan and scholar, published the clubzine Orcrist for the University of Wisconsin Tolkien Society, which he founded, for 40 years and he also founded a J. R. R. Tolkien book discussion group which met continuously for more than fifty years. He was a founding member of The Madison Science Fiction Group, and one of the founders of the feminist science fiction convention, WisCon.
He was the Serials and Technical Services Librarian at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was the editor of the book Tolkien Criticism: An Annotated Checklist (Kent State, 1970), contributed essays to numerous books and journals about Tolkien and fantasy, and served on the board of editors for the journal Extrapolations.
He married Perri Corrick in 1977. In 2020, he died of Covid-19.
