According to Jack Speer in Fancyclopedia 1’s “Drama” entry, Legion of Legions was the first fannish play ever performed. Art Widner adapted it from Russell Chauvenet's parody of the 1934 Jack Williamson novel, The Legion of Space, in which the hero's iron fortitude completes the cackle-cackle machine, saving the Earth.
It was performed as theater-in-the-round at Boskone II in 1942. Scripts were handed out to the audience, who were happy to shout out prompts when the cast forgot its lines.
