Nils Frome, an early Canadian fan, edited SupraMundane Stories, the first Canadian genzine, and possibly the country’s first fanzine, in the late 1930s . An artist, he contributed illos to many American fanzines (sometimes under his own name and sometimes under the penname Herkanos), via Sam Moskowitz, who acted as his U.S. agent.

He was a correspondent of H. P. Lovecraft’s. The letters were published in Phantastique/Science Fiction Critic (March 1938) and HPL’s Uncollected Letters (Necronomicon Press, 1986). Sam Moskowitz wrote Howard Phillips Lovecraft and Nils Helmer Frome (Moshassuck Press, 1989). World War II fafiated Frome.

Nils was born in Sweden. He was given to a foster family when his mother died and emigrated with another adoptive family to Canada in 1924. He lived outside Vancouver and worked as a cook in a lumber camp. After high school, he attended Vocational Art School in Vancouver. Success as a commercial artist eluded him. Ultimately, he returned to Sweden and finally moved to Wales, where he died in destitution.
