Joe Mayhew

Joe Mayhew was an active fan nearly all of his life, a member of WSFA, award-winning fan artist. He chaired the 1987 Disclave and would have chaired the cancelled 1998 Disclave. He won the 1998 Best Fan Artist Hugo and the 2000 Best Fan Artist Hugo (the latter posthumously), and was also nominated for Best Fan Artist in 1990, 1996, 1997, and 1999. His cartoons have appeared in Asimov's, Analog, Pirate Writings, and innumerable fanzines.
He served as WSFA Secretary and editor of the WSFA Journal several times, most recently 1995-1996. He helped start Son of the WSFA Journal. He was WSFS's unofficial greeter of new people and storehouse of information about the club's history, its constitution, parliamentary procedure, and indeed everything else. He was also a member of the BSFS (which he helped start) and of Markland. He was one of the founders of the Potomac River Science Fiction Society.
He worked for the Library of Congress and was its Recommending Officer for Science Fiction, deciding what sf books were worth preserving. He also wrote some professional sf with stories appearing in Tomorrow, Aberrations (Fiction) and Aboriginal SF and reviewed sf for the Washington Post, Absolute Magnitude, and TV's Fast Forward. He also wrote a number of sf radio plays which were performed at Disclaves and Boskones.
Joe died of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.
