Frank Fears

Francis R. Fears was a UK fan from London active in the 1940s and 1950s. He attended the meeting that led to the formation of the Science Fantasy Society and became its first secretary.
Fears doesn't appear to have been in evidence fannishly speaking before 1948 when he attended the Whitcon. On 26 September 1948 he attended a meeting convened by Ken Slater and hosted by Owen Plumridge to thrash out the idea of new national fan organisation. A subsequent open meeting of London fans on 9 October resulted in the creation of the Science Fantasy Society. Fears became the Society’s secretary in which capacity he wrote to Walt Willis ('Dear Mr Wallis') inviting him to join the SFS of which he was already a member (as reported by Willis in Pamphrey #5, 1957). Science Fantasy News #3 (May/June 1949) reported 'Secretary Frank Fears mysteriously absent ( tho' it's said that he turned up at the White Horse one night when the fans weren't there – with the cause of his absence!)'.
Fears nevertheless continued to attend conventions and other events into the 1950s. An extract from Bill Temple's diaries in Relapse #18 suggests that he may have continued to attend meetings at The Globe as late as 1960.
