Faancon 2, more formally Second World Faancon, was held February 4-6, 1977 at the Clarendon Hotel in Derby, UK. It was organized by Mike Meara and Pat Meara. The third progress report lists 49 names as members.
The second progress report quoted membership rates of £1.25:
on the understanding that £1 per person will be refunded on my arrival at the hotel, or if I cancel my booking before the deadline, which is TUESDAY 4th. JANUARY 1977. (Those cancelling after this date will get refunds only if the vacancy can be filled.)
Hotel rates were £4.60 + VAT per person per night. Members were also told:
The hotel's bar has a fruit machine, but consideration is being given to the provision of some other form of automatic entertainment (e.g. table football). What would you prefer, and would you be prepared to make a purely voluntary contribution of 50p or so towards the hire charge?
Members were also reminded:
Remember that FAANCON is a low-key, informal convention, with no organised program. If you want more information on any aspect of the con, just ask Pat or me [Mike].
In the third progress report updated:
The automatic entertainment, now almost the custom at cons, has been arranged: we've booked a thing called a Sports Arena, which offers three different electronic games of the table-tennis/squash variety. Now we realise that you can't please all of the people etc. etc., but in any case no contribution towards the hire charge will be requested: instead, we're hoping you'll use the machine sufficiently for the takings to cover it. I was planning on running a Dungeons and Dragons expedition for those interested, possibly on the Saturday evening. However, the radical alterations I'm presently carrying out on my own dungeon scenario probably won't he finished in time, so those of you who are dead set on a game during the weekend would be advised to bring your own dungeons, if you have them. (You were probably going to, anyway.)
The Checkpoint 79 (February 1977) report by Peter Roberts who wasn't present said
Mike & Pat Meara's Faancon in Derby apparently went well, though the D&D players were out in such force that the con split into two groups – those engaged in Dragons & Dungeons, and those otherwise engaged. Some fifty fans turned up over the February weekend; Dave Rowe tells me they were "more or less the cream", which I suppose puts the rest of us in the skimmed milk category.
