Elevator Fandom

One of the most frustrating aspects of conventions in the typical hotel is Waiting For the Elevator. In deference to Murphy's Law, elevators always go past in the wrong direction. Sometimes they don't move at all, the management having decided that there was no need for more than one elevator after two in the morning. Such inactive elevators have at times been pressed into use by resourceful fans who were willing to volunteer their services as elevator operators.

According to legend, G. M. Carr got her head stuck in the door of an elevator at the Chicon II in 1952. And there was an elevator at the Francisco Torres, which wasn't critically needed, as the Torres was only seven stories high. It was the scene of a late night poker game, with fans boarding it to get to a party, dropping in on the game for a hand or two, and then eventually going on to the party.
