(???? – )
D. E. Essam was a UK fan likely from the Nuneaton area in the 1930s. She is a contender for the first known female fan in the UK.
Novae Terrae #13 (June 1937) listed new members of the Science Fiction Association (SFA) amongst whom were “Miss A. Feather (Anglesey)”. In Generation Femizine, Rob Hansen asserts that she is “the first and last British woman to be named a member of the SFA in the pages of Novae Terrae”.
However, Novae Terrae #11 (April 1937) carries a report of a meeting of the Nuneaton Branch of the SFA on March 17, 1937 at the house of Dennis Jacques:
A newcomer was Miss D. E. Essam, a prospective member of the Association.
There is no evidence that she did in fact join the SFA and she is not mentioned further in the pages of Novae Terrae.
