American pro writer born in Britain, he won the 1994 Best Novelette Hugo for "Georgia On My Mind," which also won the 1993 Nebula Award. Sheffield served as toastmaster at BucConeer, the 1998 Worldcon in Baltimore. In addition to being an author, Sheffield was also a physicist and contributed numerous fact articles to Analog. He has published over 100 technical papers and scientific articles. Sheffield was married to author Nancy Kress. He had been President of SFWA and also of the American Astronautical Society, and served for many years as Chief Scientist of Earth Satellite Corporation.
