Presented in numerous categories to recognize individual works and achievements in art not otherwise recognized by the Hugo Awards, during a given year. The Chesleys have long been internationally acclaimed as the most prestigious awards in the field of fantastic arts. These awards have been nominated and decided upon by the members of the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists (ASFA) since 1985.
The Chesley Award was named after famed astronomical artist Chesley Bonestell (1888-1986), who helped inspire the American space program. They were first given in 1985 at LoneStarCon, the 1985 Nasfic and initially called the Annual ASFA Awards. The first physical trophy was given in 1986 and was created by Richard Pini.
