Frederick William Clarke was the brother of Arthur C. Clarke, and often stood in for him after Arthur moved to Sri Lanka. His brother's staunchest supporter, he wrote the biography Arthur C. Clarke: A Life Remembered, which includes much history of 1930s and ’40s UK fandom.
Fred was a Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society and the founder of the Clarke family imprint Rocket Publishing.
He served in the Royal Mechanical and Electrical Engineers in Africa and Burma during World War II and was awarded citations including the Burma Star, the Defence Medal and the War Medal. He wrote the book, Installing Small Pipe Central Heating: Practical Guide (1967).
