The Alfie Awards (named after SF writer Alfred Bester, the winner of the first Hugo Award ever) were created by George R. R. Martin in 2015 as his answer to the mess made of the 2015 Hugos by the Sad Puppies and the Rabid Puppies. He awarded them again in 2016.

The Alfies were awarded at the Hugo Losers Party organized by Martin following the Hugo Ceremony at Sasquan and again at MidAmeriCon 2. The actual Alfie trophy harked back to some of the earliest Hugo trophies which were rocket-shaped automobile hood ornaments mounted on blocks. Each Alfie trophy was different, and each featured a rocket-like hood ornament which had been cleaned, polished and plated to a new, shining finish.

The Rabid Puppies and Sad Puppies created bloc votes during Hugo nominations which managed to put their candidates on the ballot, pushing off legitimate works. In a number of categories, where the nominees were all from a bloc, the Hugo voters in protest voted No Award, and no Hugo Award was made in that category.

In 2015 the Alfies were given in those categories to the work which was not part of a bloc and which came closest to getting on the ballot, but failed due to the bloc votes. In 2016, they were given to the top nominee pushed off the final ballot by the bloc vote.

In addition, Martin gave out some Special Committee Awards, which were his own choices to recognize particularly outstanding actions.
