The Count Dracula Society (CDS) was founded in 1962 by Dr. Donald A. Reed and was devoted "to the serious study of horror films and gothic literature." The Society evolved into the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films aka The Saturn Awards Organization.

The Academy is a non-profit organization with membership open to the public. The Academy was founded in 1972 to honor, recognize, and promote genre films, and annually presents the Saturn Awards. The Saturn Awards, established in 1972 by Reed, are given for outstanding achievement and merit in fantastic films released during the previous year. Categories are similar to those of the Oscar Awards. The first awards were presented in 1972 by actor William Shatner. Although the awards still primarily nominate films and TV in the SF, fantasy, and horror categories, the Saturns have also recognized productions in standard dramatic genres. There are also special awards for lifetime achievement in the field.

The Count Dracula Society awards were given in a variety of categories by the Count Dracula Society, beginning in 1963. These awards are no longer given. Forrest J Ackerman (Literature) and Boris Karloff (Cinema) were the first recipients of Count Dracula Society awards.
