The Science Fiction Syndicate was the name given to his business by SF fan D. R. Welch of Austin, Texas, in the early 1930s.

Welch hoped to further his business of buying and selling fanzines and prozines by writing the Science Fiction Bibliography, which he then had published by William Crawford.

SF historian Sam Moskowitz credited Welch's work as being the first such publication and called it "a collector's item of great interest." A detailed description of the Science Fiction Bibliography by Jon D. Swartz was published in the Spring, 2002 issue of Scientifiction: The First Fandom Report.
