Richard Pini was born in New Haven, Connecticut. After an outstanding academic career at school, he was accepted into MIT, where he received a degree in astrophysics.

A longtime fan of SF, while in college he began reading comic books.

He met Wendy Fletcher through the letter column of a comic book, they eventually married, and together they created the Elfquest series of comics and books.

After college, Richard took a position at Boston's Charles Hayden Planetarium. Later, he taught high school astronomy, and then worked for IBM until Elfquest became a full-time occupation. He was a member of CAPA-alpha.

He and Wendy both received the Inkpot Award for their work on Elfquest.
