A ribbon is attached to a con badge to indicate rank, function or affiliation.

At conventions, attendees typically wear nametag badges. Some conventions provide members with ribbons to be attached to their badges, designating GoHs, program participants, etc. Clubs got in on the act, with their own custom ribbons. And then fans came up with all sorts of silly printed ribbons.
