N. Katherine Hayles

Nancy Katherine Hayles, an American academic and critic concerned with the intersection of literature, science and technology, is the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor Emerita of Literature, Trinity College of Arts & Sciences at Duke University in Durham, NC.

Hayles was born in St. Louis. She received a B.S. in chemistry from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1966, and an M.S. in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 1969. After working as a research chemist, she switched fields and received an M.A. in English literature from Michigan State University in 1970, and a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Rochester in 1977.
