Joseph W. Ferman was born in Lithuania and emigrated to the US as a child. He was Vice-president and director of [[Mercury Press]] and published of ''[[F&SF]]'', and ''[[Venture]]'' (as well as other, non-[[SF]] magazines).  He was officially editor of ''[[F&SF]]'' from December 1964 to December 1965 before turning the title over to his son, [[Edward Ferman]] who had already been doing the work.  (He and his son were described as "the only gentlemen in [[sf]] publishing.")  He also edited one anthology.
