Don Franson was a longtime fan who lived most of his life in LA. He was active in the N3F and LASFS (including serving as secretary) for years and was a member of N'APA. He was also a member of the Professor Challenger Society and the Interplanetary Exploration Society. He was a member of the First Fandom club and SFWA.

With Howard DeVore, he wrote several editions of A History of the Hugo, Nebula and International Fantasy Awards which was published by Advent . (The latest edition, in 1998, had a slightly different title (Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards). It was nominated for a Hugo for Best Related Book. He also wrote A Key to the Terminology of Science Fiction Fandom (1962), Science Fiction Title Changes, and Some Historical Facts About Science-Fiction Fandom.

At one time or another, he was an N3F directorate member, president (1963, 1964, and 1968), club historian, edited The National Fantasy Fan in 1965, 1981-1983, 1988-1991 and edited a fanzine that he sent to N3F members, The Trash Barrel.

In his honor, the September 2002 issue of The National Fantasy Fan was a "Don Franson Memorial Issue."
