Cordwainer Smith was the penname used by author Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger for his SF works.

He is remembered by SF fans today for his “Instrumentality” series of novels and stories, and particularly for his first story "Scanners Live in Vain" (June 1950). In 1993, a collection of his short SF work was reprinted by NESFA Press in The Rediscovery of Man (which was Book of Honor at Potlatch 12.

He provided an inspiration for many other fannish endeavors including Jwindz Press, Old Earth Books, Along Alpha Ralpha Boulevard, Norstrilia Press, and the MITSFS's Onseck.

The Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award is named after him.
