Lehr was a major pro artist. Along with John Schoenherr, he studied under the legendary Stanley Meltzoff.
He sold his first SF painting to Bantam Books in 1958 for the cover of Satellite E-One, a book by J. L. Castle. Subsequently, he sold hundreds of other paintings for SF hardcover and paperback books, including Last Starship from Earth (1958), Methuselah's Children (1960), Adventures in Time and Space (1966), Pollinators of Eden (1969), Sturgeon Is Alive and Well (1971), and Players of Null-A (1974). He later provided artwork for such magazines as Omni, Playboy, Time, Life, and The Saturday Evening Post.
