Mancon Awards
The Mancon Awards were announced awards for best British fan writer and fan artist scheduled to be given at Mancon in Manchester, UK in 1952. Had they gone ahead they would have been the first UK awards for fan activity.
The awards were mentioned as part of an advertisement for the convention in Space Diversions #2 (August 1952). Members were encouraged to send their votes for for best British fan writer and fan artist of 1952–3 to Bill Jesson.
However, contemporary reports make no mention of an announcement and a report in Space Diversions #3 (October-November 1952) says it was among a number of scheduled items that were omitted. The convention was over-programmed and not everything listed in the programme booklet actually happened. Paul Sowerby, writing in Post War, said that, the awards 'were not made because public opinion which was to act as judge wasn't forthcoming'.
