(Did you mean Frances Helen Sykora, her sister-in-law?)

(August 16, 1920 – April 1, 2006)

Frances Teresa Alberti (later Sykora, then Quarterman) attended the first Worldcon, NYCon, in 1939, with her older sister, Rose Alberti, and their parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. Alberti. She had been part of the Newark fan group.

She was first a “girl reporter” and later editor of Fantasy-News. She became a member and secretary-treasurer of the Queens SF League, where she participated in the mini Exclusion Act at the January 1941 meeting. Her siblings, Rose and Bill, also belonged to the club. Frances was on the roster of TLMA, as well.

Soon after the first Worldcon, Frances married Triumvir Will Sykora, one of NYCon’s organizers, and a BNF in New York. The Sykoras had six children: Annabelle (b. June 18, 1942), Charles Frank (b. March 9, 1947), Caroline (b. September 10, 1948), Hope Sibyl (September 3, 1954), Frances Ann (b. March 23, 1960) and Sally Lexi (b. 1967).

While the Sykoras brought young Annabelle to QSFL meetings, by the 1950s, Frances’ fanac (understandably) had slowed, and then stopped. In 1970, she divorced Sykora, moved to Marseilles, Illinois, and, in 1975, married Leonard A. Quarterman (1920–1978).
