Literature of the Fantastic

A stuffy way academics say "science fiction" and "fantasy." When used that way by academics, it's just meant to be formal and inclusive (unlike "SF" which is informal and inclusive) and serious enough to be included in a published paper.
But sometimes it's used by fans who should know better to distance themselves from SF's gutter. (See "Speculative Fiction" and "Let's Take Science Fiction Out of the Universities and Put It Back into the Gutter Where It Belongs".)
