Living in Bradford, UK, Derek Pickles published the fanzine Phantasmagoria from 1950 through 1955 and ran for TAFF in 1954. He is credited with first offering fanzines for "The Usual," which indicates trade, article, or LOC.

He was the organizer of NECON and a founder of the Bradford Science Fiction Association. In the early 1950s he was the British representative for the National Fantasy Fan Federation (N3F).

He gafiated in 1956 following cancer treatment, but returned to fandom in the 1990s.
