Winner: Philip José Farmer

This first year of the Hugos there was no shortlist of nominees, nor voting by the members of the convention. The winner was chosen by the Philcon II committee.

Presented September 7, 1953 at Philcon II.

The Best New SF Author or Artist Hugo category was a one-time category, awarded only in 1953 at Philcon II, the first year the Hugos were awarded. It was replaced in 1955 (the next year the Hugos were awarded) with Most Promising New Author.

Arguably, this category was revived in 1973 with the establishment of the Campbell Award.
