As of 1994, Joe Sanders taught English at Lakeland Community College, Mentor, Ohio. He was a member of FAPA, and has written books on Roger Zelazny and E. E. "Doc" Smith, many articles, and hundreds of book reviews.

He began reading SF in the late 1940s and has been involved in fandom since the mid-1950s. See his 1994 book Science Fiction Fandom. In recent years, his fanac has been very limited, but he has labored to explain fandom to the academic world and vice versa.
