Michael Gilbert was a prolific fan artist in the late 1960s in Locus and other fanzines, as well as an author and publishing professional. He graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1970, and married Sheila Gilbert (née Elkin), in 1971. He died of complications following open-heart surgery.

Later he did illustrations for Fantasy Games Unlimited, Analog, and F&SF, and served as art director for IF.

He also produced wargames, such as Down Styphon.
