Roby Wentz (born John Roby Wentz) was born in Sacremento, California. A graduate of Stanford, he moved to the Los Angeles area in the mid-1930s. He began attending political meetings at the Heinleins, where he met Elma Langhorne Miller, whom he married in 1937. Elma and Roby divorced in the 1940s. He married Beatrice Davidson in 1949.
In the 1940s, he published some short fantasy, ran a publishing company and served in the military during WWII.
