Sophie Louise Wenzel Ellis, a Southern writer, began publishing in the pulps in 1919 as Sophie Louise Wenzel. Her work appeared in The Thrill Book, Weird Tales and Astounding Stories of Super Science, among others. She was the first female writer to be published in Astounding, with a story in the second issue (February 1930).
