From his boyhood Nowlan was a fan of the stories of [[Jules Verne]].  After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, where he played football and acted in university shows, he worked as a newspaper columnist.  He moved to the Philadelphia suburb of Bala Cynwyd and created and wrote the [[Buck Rogers]] comic strip.  He also wrote several other stories for the [[science fiction magazines]] as well as the posthumously published mystery, ''The Girl from Nowhere''.  He was married to Theresa Marie Junker, daughter of a Philadelphia baker, and they had ten children – four girls and six boys.
