Media has many definitions in mundane dictionaries, but in fandom it refers to science fiction or fantasy on a screen -- TV shows, films, videos, anime, etc.
While sf movies and shows interested fans from the outset — Forry Ackerman pubbed what may be the first media fanzine, Metropolis, in 1939 — it was not until after Star Trek hit the airwaves in 1966 that science-fiction lovers whose primary interest was not in books and prozines began to connect with fandom in any numbers.
They soon split off to create their own specialized zines and cons.
