Media has many definitions in mundane dictionaries, but in fandom it refers to science fiction or fantasy on a screen -- TV shows, films, videos, anime, etc.
While sf movies and shows interested fans from the outset, it was not until Star Trek hit the airwaves in the mid-1960s that science-fiction lovers whose primary interest was not books began to connect with fandom in any numbers.
They soon split off to create their own specialized zines and cons.
