A club, AKA The Phoenicians, active in the 1990s and early 2000s in Dartford, just SE of London. It published the clubzine Phoenicians!.
The group met on the 2nd Thursday of each month (so as not to clash with the 1st Thursday meetings) at the Phoenix pub (hence the group's alternate name) near Dartford station.
It's arguably most notable achievement was to be a major supporter (along with members of the SF² Concatenation collective) of the Anglo-Romanian SF Exchange fan fund of the 1990s that sponsored Easter Europeans to come to Britain to attend conventions: both a Festival of Fantastic Films and an Eastercon each saw two East European fans attend. (Indeed, it was a visiting Hungarian fan that coined the group's alternate title of 'The Phoenicians'.) Members of the society also visited Eastern Europe.
Its regulars included Vince (Vin¢) Clarke.
The Northumberland Heath Science Fiction Society considers itself a "quasi-incarnation" of The Phoenicians.

This is a club page. Please extend it by adding information about when and where the club met, when and by whom it was founded, how long it was active, notable accomplishments, well-known members, clubzines, any conventions it ran, external links to the club's website, other club pages, etc.
When there's a floreat (Fl.), this indicates the time or times for which we have found evidence that the club existed. This is probably not going to represent the club's full lifetime, so please update it if you can! |
