The 1956 Best Novel Hugo was presented September 3 at NyCon II. This third year of the Hugos there was for the first time a shortlist of nominees, with the winner selected by voting by the members of the convention.
Winner: Double Star by Robert A. Heinlein (Astounding Feb,Mar,Apr 1956) (Some categories were close enough in the mail ballot to require additional voting at the convention; Best Novel was not one of these, and Double Star won decisively.)

- End of Eternity by Isaac Asimov
- Not This August by C. M. Kornbluth
- The Long Tomorrow by Leigh Brackett
