Shirley Hardie Jackson was an American author. She was a very popular writer in her time, and her work has received increasing attention from literary critics in recent years. She is said to have influenced such writers as Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, Nigel Kneale, and Richard Matheson.
The Shirley Jackson Awards, for outstanding achievement in the literature of psychological suspense, horror, and the dark fantastic, are named for her.
Her most famous story is probably "The Lottery," originally published in 1948 in The New Yorker, and reprinted many times.
