James S. Avery was an early fan from Skowhegan, ME, who was nicknamed “Maine-iac. He was listed in Walt Daugherty's Directory of Fandom (April 1942). He was a member of the MSA and New Fandom, and in a brief fannish fling with Claude Degler attended Mainecon, Jr..
With Harry Warner, he was a part of the Barbarian Invasion and founded United Publications and was for a time co-editor of Spaceways.
