The SF community is fandom plus prodom — the people who participate in the subculture around science fiction that grew out of the lettercolumns of the prozines in the 1930s.
Fandom expects members of the SF community to contribute to the community pro bono. While fandom does not expect professional books or artwork to be free, professionals who are part of the community are never paid for their contributions to fanzines or participation at conventions or elsewhere in the community any more than fans are paid for running conventions.
The SF community is a gift economy.
