Formally the "J. Wayne and Elsie M. Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction" at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS, it was founded in 1982 by [[James Gunn]] who was its first Director.  In 1991, it was endowed and named for [[James Gunn]]'s parents.  It annually presents the [[John W. Campbell Memorial Award]] and the [[Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award]] and runs the [[Campbell Conference]].

With the [[Kansas City Science Fiction & Fantasy Society]] it established the [[Science Fiction Hall of Fame]] in 1996.  It moved to [[Seattle]] in 2004.
