Jim Donaldson

Jim Donaldson was a UK fan from Romford active in the 1940s and 1950s. He acted as books librarian for the British Fantasy Library (BFL).

Operation Fantast #1 in July 1949 reported that:

John Gunn is still looking for someone to lift from his shoulders the responsibility of the BFL ... what about it SFS members?

It's not clear that Donaldson was a member of the Science Fantasy Society – he doesn't appear on its membership list – but Science Fantasy News #10 (Christmas 1951) included an article from him saying the book library had been passed to him along with that from the defunct Cosmos Club about two years previously and explained the terms of its operation. The Operation Fantast Handbook of 1953 gave him as responsible for the the books with Vera Douglas and William C. Dawson handling magazines for what Ken Slater described it as 'perhaps the oldest existing organisation of fans in Britain'.

It's unclear how long Donaldson continued in this role. An advertisement for what was then called 'The British Fantasy and Science Fiction Library' appeared in Vector #4 in 1959, giving Douglas's and Dawson's names with the latter having taken on the books section.
