Annually at Worldcon during the Hugo Awards ceremony, it is traditional to project a scrolling list of the members of the sf community who’ve died in the past year. The compiler (Steven Silver since 2012) tends to take an expansive view of the community, so it is usually a very long list. The list is also published in the souvenir book.

In days when fandom was smaller and the ceremonies shorter and less complex, the toastmaster would read the names aloud. In 1968, Andrew Porter commented in Algol 14:

Alva Rogers tells me that some 20 plus names will appear in the BayCon Program Book’s In Memoriam page. Some of the people listed there are Los Angeles and Bay Area clubfans, never active in the wider world of fandom. But many will be those who have gained fame and international repute as fans, as professionals, and as simply good people.
