William Hope Hodgson was an English author. He produced a large body of work, consisting of poetry, essays, short fiction, and novels, spanning several overlapping genres including SF, fantasy, and horror.
Hodgson used his experiences at sea to lend authentic detail to his short horror stories, many of which are set on the ocean. Early in his writing career he wrote many poems, although few of them were published during his lifetime.
He is mainly remembered today for his books The House on the Borderland and Carnacki, the Ghost Finder.
He died in World War I at the age of 40.
