VirginVention
At Pacificon II in 1964, London was running unopposed for 1965 so the Pacificon committee asked Robert Silverberg to create and present a hoax bid. He got up at the site selection meeting (these were the days when site selection was done at-con as part of the main (and only) program) and proposed the VirginVention, to be held at Caneel Bay, Lawrence Rockefeller's fantastically expensive hotel on St. John, Virgin Islands. He described the natives doing sterility dances at the beach, etc.
When the vote was held, to the horror of the LonCon committee (and Silverberg), practically every hand went up for the VirginVention. Silverberg called for a recount. Loncon II won.
