Mike Zaharakis
(January 18, 1947 – July 6, 1984)
Michael George Zaharakis (aka Raki) was a fan active mainly in the 1960 and ’70s. He became a fan while stationed in the Air Force in Minot, North Dakota. Returning to Portland, Oregon after his Air Force service, he was a founder of the Society of Strangers science fiction club. He was also a member of ValAPA, TAPS, and the N3F, at one time serving on the N3F Directorate.
He married Dian Cooper in 1967. They later divorced. In 1970, he handled publicity for the week long, state-sponsored Vortex-1 music festival in McIver State Park near Escatada, Oregon. About 1976 he moved to California.
Mike was a member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW)and an ordained bishop in the Antiochian Orthodox Church. He died of leukemia in San Francisco.
