Tynecon II; The Mexicon (effectively Mexicon 1) was held May 25–28, 1984 at the Royal Station Hotel in Newcastle, UK; the venue had previously hosted the Tynecon 74, the 1974 Eastercon. The programme book, edited by Rob Hansen, lists 212 members to May 7. It does not formally identify Guests of Honour but notes that
we are particularly pleased to welcome Russell Hoban and Alasdair Gray, both writers who have built a considerable reputation for themselves in the "mainstream".
The newsletter was The Cactus Times. In his chairman's introduction, Kevin Williams wrote
Mexicon is the principle and Tynecon II is this year's manifestation of what we hope will become an annual event.
