Dr. Joseph Augustus Winter, M.D., a general practitioner from St. Joseph, Michigan, contributed occasional articles on medical subjects to Astounding. John W. Campbell wrote to him about L. Ron Hubbard’s Dianetics, with the result that Winter moved to New Jersey and became the first medical director of the Dianetics Research Foundation. However, by October 1950, he fell out with Hubbard, resigned, and began practicing his own modified version of dianetics in Manhattan.
He wrote A Doctor's Report on Dianetics: Theory and Therapy (Julian Press, 1951).
